Putin Says Kerry Lied About Al Qaeda Role in Syria -- Wall Street Journal
MOSCOW—His rhetorical assault on U.S. policy in the region showing no signs of easing, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry of lying to Congress over the presence of militant group al Qaeda in Syria.
Mr. Putin said Mr. Kerry had lied by telling Congress that al Qaeda-linked forces don’t have a role in the fight against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
“They are lying, of course, in an ugly way. I watched the debates in Congress. A congressman asks Mr. Kerry: ‘Is al Qaeda there?’ He says: ‘No, we are telling you responsibly that they’re not,’” Mr. Putin said in televised remarks at a meeting with human rights activists Wednesday.
Mr. Putin appeared to be referring to an answer Mr. Kerry gave Tuesday to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee when he said the opposition had not been infiltrated and degraded by al Qaeda but was becoming more moderate and inclusive.
