Syria Pleads To The U.N. For Protection From An American Attack

Syria Asks The United Nations To Stop U.S. Strike -- Reuters

(Reuters) - Syria has asked the United Nations to prevent "any aggression" against Syria following a call over the weekend by U.S. President Barack Obama for punitive strikes against the Syrian military for last month's chemical weapons attack.

Washington says more than 1,400 people, many of them children, were killed in the world's worst use of chemical arms since Iraq's Saddam Hussein gassed thousands of Kurds in 1988.

U.S. military action will be put to a vote in Congress, which ends its summer recess on September 9, giving President Bashar al-Assad time to prepare the ground for any assault and try to rally international support against the use of force.

UN Chief Condemns Drone Attacks And States That They Should Be Controlled By International Law

UN Chief Condemns Drone Attacks During Pakistan Visit -- Voice of America

ISLAMABAD — The United Nations secretary-general is speaking out about the use of armed drones during his visit to Pakistan. Ban Ki-moon also says that economic development is crucial to any country’s long-term security.

In Islamabad Tuesday, Ban was critical of the use of armed drones - a key but controversial component of the U.S. war against terrorism, including against targets in northwestern Pakistan.

Speaking to an audience of mainly Pakistani military and political leaders, Ban Ki-moon said the use of unmanned aerial vehicles must be controlled by international law.

War on Syria leads to World War III & Ushers in “The New World Order”

Updated June 21st, 2013

Political Opinion
By: Stewart Brennan
World United News

The topic is Syria and the appearance of what is going on in the International community.

Let me get right to the point…if Vladimir Putin truly supported Syria, why did he say they did not deliver the S-300 missile defence system to Syria and would not do so until September 2013?

Russia clearly gave Israel the assurance that Syria did not have the weapons yet and since Syrian President Assad has taken the town of Qusayr and cut off the West’s gang of terrorists from running arms across the country we see Israel pushing via the USA for all the puppet dictatorships in the Middle East to join in on the destruction of Syria before they take delivery of this defensive system?

President Morsi of Egypt is the latest to support Israel…and there seems to be a panic about getting it done before the S-300 Missile Systems are delivered.

The appearance of the Syrian situation has Russia backing Syria but I think Putin is playing the role of the Bad Cop inside the International theatre and will give into US Zionist demands at the United Nations or simply do nothing when the west attacks Syria as we saw unfold in Libya in 2011 . I say this because Putin supports Israel and has done NOTHING to bring attention to the Israeli crimes throughout the region nor has the Russian government pushed for a War Crimes tribunal against Israeli thugs. Instead he backs Israel and Israel wants the destruction of all countries that oppose them especially Syria.

Talk is cheap, I want to see real action backing up words before I ever believe Putin again…sending a few old boats to the Mediterranean is not enough if they want to send a clear message…again, why did Putin tip off Israel unless he backs them unconditionally. Why does NATO and the surrounding Middle Eastern states support Israel and the terrorists that are destroying Syria?

Very soon, Egypt’s President Morsi will have to answer to his people especially after confirming he supports the Zionist destruction of Syria, just like Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia,  & Qatar. All the Puppet States have exposed themselves by siding with the Zionist state of Israel which means they are in a frenzy to destroy Syria regardless of the  diplomatic steps they appear to take or the Bull Shit they discuss at the United Nations.

Certainly the world is at a crossroads but I believe there is a serious miscalculation being made by most of the people that support the Syrian government right now in regards to the situation of the Syrian state, it’s allies, war, and the future…

UN Security Council & Economics

The 5 permanent members of the Security Council (France, Britain, Russia, China and the USA) are all controlled by the same banking system, and that system is now emerging through the BRICS with the future seat of global power held by the largest market, “China”.

The Western banking establishment controls the world's economic drive in almost every country through their CFR corporations and banks. The purpose of this Anglo-American group was to direct the business and economics of the world after World War I. However what it is leading to is a single global currency, and judging by the way they've handled things over the last 90 or so years their plan can only lead to a world of nightmares. The people in control of the World's economy are psychopaths and are determined to get their own way regardless of how they do it.

They do not take chances when it comes to getting their own way, and total control is their business plan. That is why they brought down the Western Economy in the first place and why they set up the new one that will take its place in China...they care not where they rule from, just as long as they rule.

Do you think they care about human life? Certainly none of the 5 permanent Security Council members do...if they did, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria would not be laying in ruins right now with millions killed and tens of millions displaced with no hope for their future. Make no mistake they are determined to destroy Syria even if it means starting a global war.

Miscalculations?

The point that most people are missing is the fact that those that control the issuance of money run the entire show in America and the other Western countries…and those that control the issuance of the money, the top at least, have moved to China and have corrupted their way to controlling the communist party through the benefits of making China an Industrialized nation. The banking elite have been setting China up as the most powerful country by design...and the endless wars on terror that they created serve two purposes; 1. Profit for their war industry corporations, and 2. Bankruptcy of the West...they need to bankrupt the western economy that is spearheaded by the USA in order to bring in what they have planned all along, a One world currency centered in the most militarily untouchable country on Earth, "China". Almost every CFR affiliated western company is in China. The CFR (Council on Foreign Relations) is a club that was designed to control the business and banking direction of the world after World War I. All the oldest money as well as the richest families on the planet have their majority positions and stock in those companies and banks.

The manufacturing segment of the CFR set-up shop in China and along with them went the technology. The energy segment of the CFR has been busy plugging China into the Oil it needs to maintain their manufacturing engine all over the World but it also serves their military purpose. Energy is everything to a working economy and a mobil military. OIL is also the Achilles heal of those who control the direction of the World because without energy there is no world order...

As for the financial segment, they’ve controlled the lions share of the global banking system and are poised to bring it down or change the wires if you will to another circuit so that they can continue their domination of economics and power. War punctuates this action…rest assured they will use China as they used the USA to obliterate all other militaries.

On a side note, Saudi Arabia is in terminal decline regarding their oil production. They are pumping a ratio of 40% water to extract the oil that is left in their cash cow Ghawar oil field…the last 3 letters of this oil fields name will be prophetic since the end of it will mean the end of an era and lead to war…but I digress. The largest oil reserves on the planet next to Saudi Arabia are in Canada’s Tar Sands where China has been given Cart Blanche to extract the oil…this was approved by the sale of “NEXEN” by Washington and London business and banking interests to the State owned Chinese company CNOOC. The roadblocks in Canada have been removed to give China complete access to the Tar Sand Oil and the Canadian government rolled back laws to give Chinese state run companies immunity from prosecution for any illegal or destructive business practice China might consider as their business Interest (This comes through the free trade agreement with China FIPA)…we all know how the power structure used the term “American Interests” and how they have affected the countries their interests are in so there will be no difference with China's Interests since the same power structure dictates the terms.

The fact that they plugged China into Canadian oil should sound the alarm bells in the Pentagon, however the pentagon didn’t even flinch when China was plugged into US controlled Iraq and Iraqi oil. China then significantly increased their oil contracts in Iraq after the US and NATO destroyed Libya…so this can only lead to one conclusion since the very idea of allowing China the energy it needs to destroy the western economies is being allowed to take place, “It was planned!”
We are at the end of the Anglo-American empirewhich means they will bring the last great war on the population of the Earth…one just has to open their eyes and look at all the moves taking place right now such as the Afghan pullout and the ramp up of military action in the countries surrounding Syria and Iran. For the most part, China’s military cards are hidden…whereas the US Military is in plain sight and spread out thinly all over the World.

If you want to find out about what is really going on in the World, the bottom line is to follow the money and the way in which business flows…and since 1971 all those roads were built towards China through the CFR…considering that these banking monsters control almost everything and play to win…the Syrian conflict is seen as the beginning of the endgame while it also exposes all the old financial systems dirty little secrets. Despotic nations such as Israel & Saudi Arabia know that when this economic monster changes circuits they wont be protected anymore…but neither will anyone else for that matter…

Salvation Rests with You!

The only real CHANCE we people have to stop these war mongering psychopaths is to rise up within our own countries and reclaim our economies back from them because no one or no country is coming to the rescue to save you. We need to radically change the game by standing up in protest in every country against the governing system and change the direction we are heading in.

Imagine what would happen if we Nationalized all private banks, Nationalized our countries natural resources and repealed all the laws that were made to protect corporations. I think we'd be well on our way to a better World. We need to take back the governing structure's in our countries because big money has infected ALL political parties, and these establishment puppets are all calling for war.

If we do not make these changes in each of our countries then global depopulation through war, famine and disease will come much sooner than you think. The worst scenario imaginable is being played out right now all over the world, in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa so don’t think it wont come here because the process of turning a free society into a police state has already begun in every western country.

Surviving this insane push for war, globalization, and tyranny will require sacrifice, action, and initiative through massive action on the streets. That is the price for freedom, no one will just give it to you. Massive Civil disobedience is the only way to bring these psychopaths to their knees. We must not back down to the thugs they hire disguised as riot police either so we must reach the lower ranks of the military to side with the people they swore an oath to protect.

Bring the economic system they stole from us to a standstill and reclaim it!

An awakened population must wage a global revolution but nowhere is it more important than in the USA, because the US Military and the CIA with their Corporate Armies are being used as instruments of total annihilation so if the American people can rise up take their country back from these psychopaths the beast will fall to its knees, and as the beast falls it’s control over everything will go with it. Otherwise, the current financial establishment will take us to World War III guaranteed and their champion is China…which is where Evelyn de Rothschild, the head of the World’s richest family and controller of global banking, gold and economics now lives.

Let’s not forget that the ruling establishment that the Rothschild family presides over also want a reset button on global population. Their method to achieving this is to take us to a major war, and War is the business that achieves all their goals…and it will be a global war.

Appearances

Right now, the appearance the establishment shows is that there are 2 fronts “ The BRICS plus South America” verses “The OECD, Israel and the Oil Kingdoms”. But if you look at who controls both sides and the moves being made in banking, corporate business and energy, you will find that all Roads lead to China and the banking house of Rothschild.

Wherever they start the war, be it in Syria or Iran, and China is drawn in, look out. China has all the technology needed to destroy the west in 24 hours. They have a highly sophisticated conventional military unrivalled anywhere on the planet…and with 600 million people that are military trained, they are not going to be defeated regardless of what you think. Imagine what occupation by a million to 2 million soldiers in every country by a victorious Chinese army would look like…they will claim, as their US proxy does now, that they are there to “Protect their Interests”.

We are at a crossroads and the people around the world need to wake up now or it will be too late. Stop your governments from waging war in Syria! Stop your governments from arming terrorists! Let's not let them lead us to another war because the next one will lead to global war and the worst nightmares imagination can cook up.

2013 - China Rises: The Seat of "The New World Order"

Source: World United News
Road to Endless War – The Final Chapter – Crash of the Western Empire (2011)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPPAr_S_q7U

China was chosen as the seat of power by the global banking cartel to run their New World Order.

It began in 1971 when Henry Kissinger went to China ahead of Nixon to talk to Deng Xiaoping, the father of China’s Industrial revolution and former wealthy land-owner before the communist party took over. Coincidently the same year, Taiwan was removed as a permanent member of the UN Security Council (1971) and Mainland China took its place. Then US President Richard Nixon, the crook, changes the monetary system (1971) by removing the Gold standard and replacing it with worthless fiat money. Instantly this destabilizes the global monetary system and leads to crisis after crisis, in oil, and all things sold…inflation began to kick in. While China prepared to move from an agricultural society to an industrial society, the nations of the World began to go into an inflationary period…all synchronized and controlled by a rigged banking system that is centered on exponential growth.

In 1985 Free trade became the way in which companies could leave North America for cheaper costs in Mexico and then eventually move to China. From this point on, the western industrial capacity shrunk and relocated to China. I was in the packing Industry so I saw this first hand as China became a massive economy. In essence, while the Western economic balloon deflated, the Chinese Balloon inflated directly and by design.

Deng Xiaoping was the man that removed Chairman Mao. He had incredible power within the Communist Party and he is the reason that China is the economy it is today…but lets face facts…he had a lot of Western help. While the western companies were setting up shop in China, the Rothschild Gold Bullion Banking relocates to China (1994). In 1997 the UK govt hands over Hong Kong with its stock market running on all thrusters…China then plugs in and begins the run and expansion of their economy at a phenomenal growth rate. Meanwhile the EU prepares to take down Europe with their New Currency “The Euro”, the USA deregulates the housing industry by removing Glass Steagall and follows that up with an inside job on 911 which began the Road to Endless wars to bankrupt and finish off the USA economy completely…

Recently we have seen an escalation of war as the economies of the World print currencies that are locked in with the fiat based US reserve dollar, and the US printing presses have gone into overdrive. All the banking crimes are visible now, and silently in the background China has been plugged into all the Western oil supplies in places like Canada’s Tar sands, and war torn Iraq….China is also getting its oil from everywhere else as well.

China’s UN position to allow US led NATO to destroy Libya, was mind boggling, considering we were sold on a story that China needed African oil. No matter, they just walked over to Iraq with the US blessing and plugged into the oil there…then they did nothing to stop Syria from being destroyed…all the while our stores are filled with cheap Chinese trinkets…

Now that the EU & IMF have demanded that the Cyprus govt steal money out of the peoples accounts so that they can go further into debt with a loan from the ECB and IMF, everyone is expecting the obvious “Bank Runs” across the Euro Zone and indeed North America. They took 60% of peoples savings! Then, only a few days later, the BRICS set up a New Global Investment bank to compete against the World Bank, and the West does nothing…meanwhile, and as we go back to North Korea and the US led sanctions which China signed on to at the UN security council, we see North Korea, one of the last countries to hold out against the USA become the next target…all started and provoked by the USA with its rigid posture of sanctions and military presence and activity in South Korea since 1953! However what has changed is China’s position…this tells me that the war has arrived and will be used to crown China as the global victor and seat of power of the New World Order…and with the potential to put 600 million people into military service (In China military service is mandatory) no one will beat them in a conventional war, while no one wins a nuclear war. China can occupy every country in the World with millions of soldiers if it chose to…a brief war on the Korean peninsula would certainly crown China as the last superpower. If things get out of hand we will see it very soon.

However, even if there is no war, what becomes abundantly clear is that the economic model chosen by China and the BRICS remains the same and this model is based on exponential growth. We, the people of the Earth will not survive this direction in any way shape or form…its time to evolve away from the economic growth model to a one that takes care of everyone’s needs instead of taking care of the greed of an elite few…

UK forcing Palestinians to drop UN bid

Source: Press TV
http://www.presstv.ir/detail/2012/11/11/271565/uk-forcing-palestinians-to-drop-un-bid/

The British government is pressuring the Palestinian Authority (PA) to abandon its efforts for a non-member status in the United Nations, says a senior member of Fatah movement in Palestine.

“Until this moment, there is no international pressure on the PA concerning the UN bid (from Europe), except from Britain,” Nabil Sha’ath told Palestinian independent news agency Ma’an.

Sha’ath, who is a member of the Fatah Central Committee, said London has been trying to force the Palestinian Authority to drop its bid apparently for the US to get more time to kill regarding the bid for the recognition of a Palestinian state.

However, he pledged that the PA is determined to push with the bid despite London’s pressure and threats by the US to cut off its funding for the Palestinian Authority.

“The PA will not postpone the UN bid as it is a strategic decision,” Shaath said, adding that the bid would be submitted by the end of November.

Acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas has decided to table a resolution at the UN General Assembly for a Palestinian state.

In a recent interview with the Voice of Palestine Radio, Sha’ath stated that the PA expects several European countries to back the resolution.

“European countries are talking with us about the timing of the vote, the formula of the draft resolution to the UN.”

The US and the UK want Palestinians to return to the negotiating table over a deal with the Zionist regime of Israel.

The Palestinian-Israeli talks, observers consider no more than delaying tactics to buy time for Tel Aviv, hit a deadlock after the Israeli regime resumed building of illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories in October 2010.

The Fatah bid centers on recognition of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, but Abbas has said he will only return to talks with Israeli officials when they recognize a Palestinian state at pre-1967 borders.

Abbas is not widely supported in Palestine partly due to his position on the return of Palestinian refugees forced out of their lands by Israeli forces in May 1948.

Many Palestinians believe he has given up on the right to return, especially after his interview with Israel’s Channel 2 earlier this month where he said he ‘does not have the right’ to live in the city that his family was expelled from in 1948.

His remarks were also condemned by the resistance movement Hamas, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), and the Islamic Jihad Movement.

'Boycott them!' UN rapporteur slams companies aiding Israeli settlements

A special rapporteur for the UN’s Human Rights Council has called for a boycott on all companies involved with Israeli settlements until they adhere to international rights standards. Israel and the US have condemned the move.

In a report presented to the UN General Assembly, American professor Richard Falk said that many US, European and Mexican companies appeared to be violating international human rights and humanitarian laws. The companies are allegedly exploiting Palestinian resources, helping Israel construct illegal settlements and providing security for settlers.

Falk said the call for a boycott is an effort to take infractions of international law seriously. He said the pace of Israeli settlement building has accelerated and that Israel has ignored UN resolutions condemning the practice, so “there is a sense that what the UN says doesn't count.”

Although Falk admitted that further investigations were necessary to determine severity of the violations, the US and Israel were quick to condemn the report, accusing the UN special rapporteur of bias against Israel and calling for his removal.

US Ambassador Susan Rice stated, “Mr. Falk's recommendations do nothing to further a peaceful settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and indeed poison the environment for peace. His continued service in the role of a UN Special Rapporteur is deeply regrettable and only damages the credibility of the UN.”

Spokesperson for the Israeli Mission Karaen Peretz added that, “Israel is deeply committed to advancing human rights and firmly believes that this cause will be better served without Falk and his distasteful sideshow. While he spends pages and pages attacking Israel, Falk fails to mention even once the horrific human rights violations and ongoing terrorist attacks by Hamas.”

The Anti-Defamation League urged UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to rescind his preliminary endorsement of the report. Ki-moon has previously said that settlement activity is illegal, and “runs contrary to Israel's obligations under the Road Map and repeated Quartet calls for the parties to refrain from provocations.”

Representatives from several countries in the UN General Assembly – including Egypt and Iran – praised Falk's report as fair.

Richard Falk, an American professor emeritus of international law at Princeton University, previously angered Israel by comparing the country to Nazi Germany, and accusing it of crimes against humanity for its treatment of Palestinians.

Since 2008, Israel has barred Falk from visiting the Palestinian territories.

In July 2012, the UN Human Rights Council initiated a probe into Jewish settlements. Israel responded by saying it would bar the Council's experts from accessing the sites.

The vast majority of the international community considers the settlements in the occupied territories to be illegal. The United Nations has repeatedly upheld the view that Israel's construction of settlements constitutes a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

The International Court of Justice also said the settlements were illegal. No foreign government actively supports Israel's building of settlements.

Israel disputes the position of the international community and the legal arguments deeming the settlements illegal. The country cites its historical and biblical links to the West Bank, saying the status of the settlements should be decided in peace negotiations.

US blocks Russia's draft statement in UN on peaceful resolution of Bani Walid violence

The United States has blocked a draft statement, proposed by Russia, on the resolution of violence in the Libyan town of Bani Walid, which has been under siege for weeks. The statement called for a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Russia’s envoy to the UN, Vitaly Churkin said the move “can't be serious,” reminding the American delegation of the deadly attack in Benghazi that claimed the lives of four US diplomats in September.

“Blocking a draft statement that called to solve the country’s political problems without violence is very strange,” Churkin said. “This is a case when it is difficult to explain the US delegation’s actions in rational terms.”

The statement drafted by Russia on Bani Walid called on the Libyan authorities “to take urgent steps to resolve the conflict by peaceful means and to preserve the rights of all Libyan citizens.” It also expressed concern about the significant escalation of violence in and around the city of Bani Walid in recent days.

Lawrence Freeman, from news magazine Executive Intelligence Review says the US will block any peaceful solution to the ongoing violence in Libya, because stability in the region is not in its interests.

“The ambassador from Russia made a perfectly reasonable proposal to quiet down the violence,” he said. “And he would expect that the United States, as a super power, would respond in a rational manner. The problem is that President Obama and his UN envoy Susan Rice – they are not interested in developing peace in Libya and in the whole Middle East area. And therefore they are going to torpedo any moves that the Russians make that would tend to quiet the situation down.”

Reports from the small town indicate innocent civilians are becoming the victims of fighting between pro-government forces and Gaddafi loyalists.

The latest round of fighting was provoked by the death of Omran Shaaban, the rebel from Misrata credited with capturing Muammar Gaddafi, who was hiding in a drain pipe in Sirte on October 20, 2011. He died on September 25 after two months’ detention in Bani Walid.

Pro-government forces and militias besieged the town in order to find those responsible for the death of “the hero of a new Libya,” as Shaaban was dubbed.

Bani Walid commanders accuse pro-government troops and militias of “shelling the town with long-range weapons and even targeting the hospital.”

A local resident currently residing in Italy, but whose family remains in the town, told RT the current shelling of the town is Misrata militias’ attempt to “eliminate” it. He claims that initially the government called for an end to the violence, but later came up with a call to “clean Bani Walid.”

The UN Security Council has also discussed a possible meeting with envoy to Libya Tarek Mitri, Churkin said. But it remains unclear when he will be able to speak, even via video link.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Security Council also postponed the adoption of another two draft statements proposed by Russia. The first condemned a terrorist attack in Damascus on October 21 which caused numerous civilian deaths and injuries. The second called on both the government and the rebels to agree to a ceasefire during the Muslim holiday of Eid Al Adha, to allow the people to observe it in peace and security. Eid Al Adha starts on October 25 and lasts for three days.

Russia’s call for a ceasefire coincides with similar efforts by international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi to persuade Syrians to agree to a ceasefire during the holiday.

Brahimi left Syria on Tuesday, after finishing a four-day visit aimed at getting support for his proposal for an end to violence there.

Rebel support pushes Syria deeper into the abyss of bloody sectarianism – Lavrov

Those who insist on a ceasefire only by the Syrian government encourage the opposition to intensify its hostilities, and “take upon themselves an enormous responsibility,” Russian FM Sergey Lavrov said in a speech to the UN General Assembly.

The shortest way to stop the loss of life in Syria, Lavrov said, is to adhere to the commitments in the Geneva communique, which were agreed upon by the Action Group as follow-up of the Kofi Annan Plan.

“We proposed to adopt a resolution in the UN Security Council that would endorse the Geneva communique as the basis for negotiations at the beginning of the transitional period, but this proposal had been blocked,” Lavrov noted.

“Those who oppose the implementation of the Geneva communique,” he explained, “in fact push Syria even deeper into the abyss of bloody sectarian strife.”

Lavrov noted that the deepening of internal conflict in Syria is of particular concern because the militarization of the conflict is combined with open calls for foreign intervention.

“We have consistently called for the consolidated efforts of the international community to compel the government and its opponents to immediately cease the violence and come to the negotiating table,” Lavrov said, adding that so far, there has been no progress in reaching unanimity on how to create conditions towards achieving that goal.

The foreign minister also expressed concern about the growing number of war crimes on both sides of the conflict, as recorded in a recent report by the UN Human Rights Council.

“Extremist organizations including al-Qaeda have become more active in Syria – they perpetrate terrorist attacks against innocent civilians and civil infrastructure,” Lavrov said.

The situation in the region requires the international community to use a comprehensive approach, and to reject “simplified and ideology-driven patterns and double standards,” the FM asserted.

He also condemned any unilateral sanctions “imposed by a state or a group of states sidestepping the United Nations to advance their political goals.”

“We have no doubt that such sanctions, especially when they are applied extra-territorially, weaken the unity of the international community and undermine the effectiveness of its efforts,” Lavrov said, adding that the events of recent years have clearly shown that “unilateral actions that violate international law and go beyond the decisions of the UN Security Council or distort the substance of these decisions do not do any good.”

He urged the UN to discuss the consequences of such actions and to resume discussions on the humanitarian limits of sanctions, a topic that, he said, somehow “faded away” in the UN.

Meanwhile on Friday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Washington would contribute an additional $15 million in “non-lethal gear” to the “civilian opposition” trying to oust Assad. Another $30 million will be sent in humanitarian assistance to help people affected by the continuing conflict, Clinton said at a Friends of Syria meeting on the sidelines of the UNGA.

"It is no secret that our attempts to move forward at the UN Security Council have been blocked repeatedly, but the United States is not waiting," Clinton said.

Netanyahu plays cartoonist, goes apocalyptic over ‘Iranian bomb’ at UN

Unable to win US support for a figurative ‘red line’ on Iran’s nuclear program, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu drew a literal one during a speech to the UN General Assembly, and offered an apocalyptic vision of a nuclear bombing of Israel.

Netanyahu used a large diagram of a cartoonish bomb to represent Tehran’s alleged ambition to create a nuclear weapon. The drawing was divided into three sections, with marks indicating 70 percent and 90 percent of the uranium enrichment required to build an atomic bomb.

“Iran is 70 percent of the way there, and are well into the second stage. By next summer, at current enrichment rates, they will have finished the medium enrichment and move on to the final stage. From there it is only a few more weeks before they have enriched enough for a bomb,” he said.

The Israeli leader used a red marker to show the line at which he believes the world should intervene to halt the enrichment, claiming that this was the only way to peacefully resolve the issue.

“I believe that faced with a clear red line, Iran will back down – and it will give more time for sanctions and diplomacy,” he said, adding that the deadline may come as soon as next Spring.

The alternative, Netanyahu said, is a nuclear-armed Iran, which he likened to a nuclear-armed Al Qaeda. He called the Iranian leadership “apocalyptic,” and argued that they would use a nuclear weapon against Israel even if it meant the destruction of their own country.

The diagram implied that Iran is amassing enriched uranium with the intention of creating a nuclear device, and that at the 90 percent mark it would be very close to completion. Netanyahu did not offer any new evidence that Iran had overcome the numerous other scientific and technological hurdles necessary to create a nuclear weapon.

Tehran dismissed Netanyahu’s charges as “baseless and absurd.” Israel, “on a daily basis, threatens countries in the region, particularly my country with military attack,” Iran’s Deputy Ambassador to the UN Asman al-Habib Es'haq Al-e-Habib said. He warned that Iran would retaliate if Israel attempted to attack Iranian nuclear facilities.

Netanyahu is not the first politician to use props at the United Nations to call for international action against a sovereign country. In February 2003, then-US Secretary of State Collin Powell spoke before the UN Security Council holding a vial that he said could contain anthrax produced by Saddam Hussein. No anthrax or other alleged weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq after it was invaded and occupied by a US-led coalition

Netanyahu has been campaigning for a “clear red line” to curb Iran’s alleged nuclear ambitions since the beginning of September. The hard pressure apparently cost him a meeting with US President Barack Obama. The American leader refused to sit down to talks with Netanyahu on the outlines of the 67th UN General Assembly after the Israeli PM lashed out at Washington’s unwillingness “to set deadlines” for Iran.

The address to global leaders may well be a final warning before Israel takes matters into its own hands. The country's leadership has been relentlessly issuing warnings that it may soon stage a unilateral attack on Iran, flouting even American wishes.

Israel considers Iran an "existential" peril, given the rhetoric coming from the Islamic Republic's leaders that Israel will be eliminited.

Nevertheless, Iran insists that its nuclear program seeks to meet energy supplies and medical needs.

The US, while trying to keep Israel away from attacking Iran, believes that Tehran is yet to make a final decision on whether to use its uranium stocks to build weapons. So far, in Washington's opinion, the Islamic Republic does not appear to possess the necessary infrascture to do so.

‘Nothing will happen until November’

Netanyahu does not need to convince the entire world of his fears, as one actor is sufficient, Shikha Dalmia, senior policy analyst at the think tank Reason Foundation told RT.

“He is trying to raise the alarm level in the world over the possibility of a nuclear Iran,” she said. “But the fact of the matter is that he does not have to convince the whole world of his case. He just has to convince one country and essentially one person, and that is President Obama. Without US support for some kind of military intervention, he can draw whatever maps and charts and other graphs that he wants. It’s not going to mean a lot.”

And no matter what the US administration opts to do, it will have to wait until November, says Dalmia.

“One can argue that Iran would not be a full-fledged war, it would be a surgical strike, but it is till quite a lot,” she said. “So whether Obama is going to be able to undertake an action like that is completely up in the air, but one thing is clear: he will not want it before November, before the elections.”

Calls for Assad capitulation, not dialogue, encourages Syria terror - Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov blamed the ongoing violence in Syria on “some states,” which encourage Syrian rebel terrorism and their refusal to negotiate. Lavrov made his remarks during a UN Security Council session.

In a high-level meeting of the Security Council on Middle East security, two world powers – Russia and the United States – clashed over interpretations of the ongoing violence in Syria, and how to end the bloodshed.

"The states that encourage the opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to give up on the ceasefire and dialogue and to demand that the regime capitulate, bear responsibility for the continuing bloodshed," Lavrov said. "Such an approach is unrealistic and encourages terrorism, which is used by the opposition."

Lavrov reiterated Russia’s longstanding position that “stable settlement of the crisis can only be achieved through negotiation and compromise, taking into account the interests of all the faiths and ethnic groups of Syrian society." The Russian FM argued that the groundwork for a peaceful resolution should follow the Kofi Annan peace plan and the Geneva communique, and related Security Council resolutions.

"We see that the initiative put forth by Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has potential,” he said. In August, during a summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Mecca, Morsi called for the creation of "a quartet" to resolve the Syrian crisis. The group would include Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iran, the latter two being understood to have strong influence in the region.

Washington accused the UN's decision-making body of paralysis, and the Syrian leader of “murdering of his own people.”

“The atrocities mount while the Security Council remains paralyzed, and I would urge that we try once again to find a path forward,” US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the Council, referring to Russia and China’s previous vetoes of Western-backed resolutions. Clinton was not present for Lavrov's remarks to the Security Council, citing a previous engagement.

As permanent members of the Security Council, Russia and China blocked three resolutions that would have imposed further sanctions on the Syrian government. Both countries argued that the only way to solve the crisis is through negotiations.

Other states of the 15-member council also called for action. “As the international community, we must be united to stop the violence and help initiate a process of political transition. We must find a common response. We owe it to the people,” German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said.

UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon said that “there is no military solution to this crisis” in Syria, and urged a political solution.

Punishing blasphemy

Another topic that dominated the Security Council's discussion was the Islamophobic, US-made amateurm film that sparked massive protests across the Muslim world.

Arab League representative Nabil Elaraby demanded that the Security Council criminalize acts that insult or cause offense to religions, arguing that unless blasphemy laws are enacted and enforced, similar violence could once again erupt.

"If the international community has criminalized bodily harm, it must just as well criminalize psychological and spiritual harm," Elaraby said.

The League of Arab States "calls for the development of an international legal framework which is binding … in order to confront insulting religions and ensure that religious faith and its symbols are respected."

Twin blasts rock Damascus, deadly clashes reported inside army HQ

Two large explosions shook the Syrian capital of Damascus, reportedly targeting army command buildings in the heart of the city. The Free Syrian Army claimed responsibility for the bombings.

Violent clashes are now on inside the Army Headqurters building, leaving deaths on both sides, AFP reported, quoting the human rights activists.

Syrian state TV alleged that "terrorists" were responsible for the twin explosions in Umayad Square, where the Ministry of Defense is located. The bombings occurred around 7:00am local time (4:00 GMT).

The explosion sparked a fire near the Ministry of Defense building. The Syrian Army Headquarters was also one of the targets of the attack, reports suggested.

On Twitter, witnesses wrote of hearing heavy gunfire near the site of the blasts.

The area around the blast is reportedly still cordoned off, hours after the attack.

The bombings caused only “material damage,” and no military leaders were killed, the Syrian information minister said.

The explosive device may have been planted inside the military complex, the minister added.

Qatar calls for Arab led military intervention in Syria

The ongoing violence in Syria is the main issue at the 67th UN General Assembly. Despite calls by the UN chief to end the violence, Qatar urged an Arab-led military intervention in the country and Western leaders pledged support for rebel groups.

“The Security Council failed to reach an effective position. In view of this, I think that it is better for the Arab countries themselves to interfere,” said Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar. Al-Thani urged neighboring nations to act “out of their national, humanitarian, political and military duties” and bring an end to the violence in Syria.

Earlier, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani said in an interview with CNN that a no-fly zone over Syria is needed as a “Plan B.”

Western leaders have taken a uniformly hard line on what they see as the need to oust Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. French President Francois Hollande called on the UN to immediately provide protection for Syrian opposition groups and rebel-held territories.

“I know one thing is certain: The Syrian regime will never again take its place in the council of nations,” Hollande said. “Without any delay, I call upon the United Nations to provide immediately to the Syrian people all the support it asks of us and to protect liberated zones.”

“How many more deaths will we wait for before we act? How can we let the paralysis of the United Nations continue?” he said, likely alluding to three instances where Russia and China vetoed UN Security Council resolutions on Syria they deemed biased.

In August, France began channeling aid to Syria’s rebel-held regions. While Hollande called for Western and Arab countries to intervene in Syria, he also criticized Iran for doing just that: "It is clear that we have all the proof we need that Iran is intervening by human and material means in Syria, and this is unacceptable."

Hollande also reiterated his promise to recognize a“provisional Syrian government,” a step that could lead to direct military support for the Syrian rebels.

US President Barack Obama leveled further harsh criticism against Assad: "As we meet here, we again declare that the regime of Bashar al-Assad must come to an end so that the suffering of the Syrian people can stop and a new dawn can begin.”

The US and its allies frequently call for sanctions and regime change in Syria. Other countries, like Russia and China, favor diplomacy.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon took a balanced stance, arguing in his opening statement that the international community must “stop the violence and flows of arms to both sides, and set in motion a Syrian-led transition as soon as possible.”

UN and Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi expressed interest in “maintaining active contacts” with Moscow, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister said after FM Sergey Lavrov held a bilateral meeting with Brahimi on the sidelines of the General Assembly. Russia invited Brahimi to Moscow in the coming months in the hopes of crafting a plan to resolve the Syria crisis.
