Iran Joins World Powers In Nuclear Talks -- Al Jazeera

Foreign minister's presence in meeting in UN marks highest-level direct Iran-US contact in six years.

Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iranian foreign minister, has begun talks with six world powers at the United Nations on his country's disputed nuclear programme, taking a seat next to John Kerry, US secretary of state.

Thursday's meeting, taking place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York City, marks the highest-level direct contact between the US and Iran in six years.

Before the meeting, US officials tried to reduce expectations of any quick breakthrough.
