After Last Weeks U.S. - Russian Syrian Agreement On Chemical Weapons, Turkey Feels Isolated

Davutoglu: Shooting Down of Helicopter 'Punishment' for Syria -- Kadri Gursel, Al-Monitor

First, let’s have look how the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government’s spokesman and Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc voiced his own and his party’s reaction to the US-Russia accord on elimination of the Baath regime’s chemical weapons: "Until today, according to official counts, about 120,000 people have died in Syria including children, women and youth. None of them were killed with chemical weapons until Aug. 21 at Ghouta. About 110,000 people have been killed with conventional weapons. Assad and his supporters still have those weapons, and they will continue to kill with them. Won’t anyone be held responsible for the massacres? The events we live through make us rebel. The answers to these questions are not in the US-Russia agreement. Turkey’s attitude is humanitarian. We will do our part."

Without fully grasping what Arinc meant, the factors that led to shooting down a Syrian helicopter by a Turkish warplane the next day on grounds of violating Turkish airspace can’t be understood.

The Syrian helicopter that violated Turkish airspace was not actually shot down because of the violation. It was shot down because those who rule Turkey are furious and upset with the entire world and because they feel extremely isolated.

My Comment: The Turks are not the only ones who now feel abandoned and isolated.

Tensions On The Syrian - Turkish Border Escalating

Amid Explosions and Clashes, Volatile Turkey-Syria Border Gets More Dangerous -- Time

It’s far from what the Turks had in mind. In late 2009, at the height of its detente with Syria, the Ankara government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan lifted visa requirements for Syrian nationals and floated plans for future energy cooperation, investments, as well a free trade zone. Less then four years later, with its southern neighbor gripped by war, and with Turkey openly calling for the US to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad‘s regime, the border has become a flashpoint. The area — expected to be a crossroads for traders, business people and tourists — now teems with refugees, smugglers and insurgents.

According to the International Crisis Group (ICG), a Brussels-based think tank, 75 people have died in violence along the border since June 2012, when Syrian air defenses shot down a Turkish fighter jet over the Mediterranean. The threat of further bloodshed may be around the corner. On Monday, a pair of Turkish F-16s downed a Syrian helicopter that had crossed into Turkish airspace. “Nobody will dare to violate Turkey’s borders again,” the country’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced. “The necessary measures have been taken.”

Turkish Warplanes Shoot Down Syrian Helicopter -- Al-Arabiya

Turkish warplanes downed a Syrian helicopter on Monday after it violated Turkish airspace.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said a Syrian plane was detected two kilometers (1.2 miles) inside Turkish airspace at 2:20pm (1120 GMT).

“It was continuously warned by our air defense but as the violation continued, it fell on Syrian soil, having been hit by missiles from our planes,” he added, according to statements carried by Agence France Press.

Turkey said it will provide the U.N. Security Council and the NATO military alliance with details of Monday's shooting.

Turkey Rotates Missiles Towards Syria -- Today's Zaman

Turkey has rotated its surface-to-air towards Syria in the southern province of Hatay after an apparent poison gas attack in Damascus a week ago which may lead to Western military action.

Turkey, which has a 900-kilometer border with Syria, hosts half a million refugees from the two-and-a-half year conflict and is braced for a new influx should Western powers strike.

As Turkey is readying itself for a possible military operation against Syria, the Turkish army has deployed a number of missiles in Hatay's Kırıkhan district. The army has rotated Stinger and I-Hawk missiles towards Syria.

My Comment: I am not surprised that Turkey is deeply disturbed about last weeks chemical attack in a Damascus suburb .... if the situation goes out of control in Syria, they may find themselves at the end of a missile attack with chemical weapons.

Update: The Turks are also worried on the chemical stockpiles that the Syrian rebels may have.
