Everybody Is Spying

Face It: Everybody Spies -- Joshua Foust, War Is Boring

Why is there outcry only over American spying?

Over the weekend Guardian reporter Glenn Greenwald leaked more top secret National Security Agency documents to “Fantastico,” a TV newsprogram that airs in Brazil. The documents, which detail successful espionage against the presidents of Brazil and Mexico, is causing an uproar in Brazil — and now Brazilian Pres. Dilma Rousseff is publicly considering whether to cancel her planned trip the U.S. next month. The White House had planned to honor Rousseff with a full state dinner — the only head of state to get one this year.

Rousseff claims the U.S. spying operation is so severe, it constitutes a violation of Brazil’s sovereignty. But really, why the uproar? At a certain level, the revelations are like realizing there is gambling at Rick’s — if it weren’t, one would really wonder why the U.S. intelligence community wasn’t actively spying on other governments, especially those with enormous organized crime and drug issues that happen to sit along primary transatlantic fiber optic cables.

Sadly .... Joshua Foust is right.

NSA whistleblower Bill Binney advocates dismantling spy agency through defunding, August 26, 2013

Source: RT.com, whistleblower.org

This weekend the NSA made headlines once again. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, there are multiple cases of the agency employees using resources to spy on their love interests. Also German media accused the NSA of spying on United Nations officials. As more and more details about NSA activities become public, people start questioning whether they want to fund questionable spying operations with their tax dollars. Whistleblower Bill Binney joins us for more on the latest developments. -RT.com

NSA Violated Surveillance Rules Thousands of Times, Intercepted All 202 Area Code Calls By Accident, August 16, 2013

Source: democracynow.org

The Washington Post has revealed the National Security Agency has broken privacy rules or overstepped its legal authority thousands of times each year since Congress granted the agency broad new powers in 2008. According to an NSA audit from May 2012 leaked by Edward Snowden, there were 2,776 incidents in the preceding 12 months of unauthorized collection, storage, access to or distribution of legally protected communications.

In one case, the NSA intercepted a "large number" of calls placed from Washington when a programming error confused the U.S. area code 202 for 20, the international dialing code for Egypt. The audit only counted violations committed at the NSA's Fort Meade headquarters and other facilities in the Washington area. Source: RT.com

Late last week, President Obama addressed the NSA's surveillance program leaks and declared a thorough review of the agency's operations before Edward Snowden leaked the information to The Guardian, but now the NSA is going to fire 90 percent of its system administrators to minimize the number of people who have access to sensitive classified information. The massive NSA snooping revelations have cast a shadow over John Kerry's trip to Latin America - his first visit there since he assumed the position of Secretary of State. He has already received a chilly reception in Colombia - where officials demanded an explanation to reports that Washington had collected vast amounts of internet data there. The next stop on his trip is Brazil - which allegedly was the top regional target of the surveillance program. For more perspective RT talks to geopolitical analyst Eric Draitser. -RT.com

E-Mail In The U.S. Will No Longer Be Confidential

Secure E-Mail Companies Say There’s No Such Thing Anymore -- Bloomberg Businessweek

When President Obama held a news conference on Friday to reassure Americans about the National Security Agency’s hi-tech spying, he focused primarily on such policy themes as transparency and oversight. Skeptics immediately described the plan as a way to make people more comfortable with surveillance rather than changing the underlying practices.

“Instanalysis: President Obama proposed measures to make the American people more comfortable with NSA programs, not to end bulk surveillance.”

—Alex Howard (@digiphile), Aug. 9, 2013

For several providers of secure electronic communications, no amount of official reassurance could change one basic fact: There is no technical way for them to make e-mail that they consider “unsnoopable.” The day before Obama’s comments, Lavabit, a secure e-mail provider that was reportedly used by Edward Snowden, announced it was suspending its service and offered this word of warning to its now-former users:

“Without congressional action or a strong judicial precedent, I would strongly recommend against anyone trusting their private data to a company with physical ties to the United States.”

Is The Tide Turning On NSA Surveillance?

With NSA And NYPD Under Scrutiny, Is Tide Turning On Surveillance? -- Christian Science Monitor

The NYPD is dropping more than a half million names from its stop-and-frisk database, and NSA surveillance may face new scrutiny for reportedly sifting the actual content of Americans' e-mail.

Government surveillance programs are on the defensive.

On Wednesday, the New York Police Department agreed to expunge more than a half million names from its stop-and-frisk database – another blow to the embattled crime-fighting tactic that Mayor Michael Bloomberg has hailed as a key policy in the city’s plunging crime rate.

And the National Security Administration, already under fire from revelations that it has been vacuuming up vast amounts of Americans’ private phone and e-mail data, likely will face increased scrutiny as it has also been sifting through some of the actual content – a fact previously undisclosed – according to a New York Times investigation.

My Comment:
I find there is a generational gap when it comes to opinions on the NSA's surveillance programs. Older generations (like my mom who is 87) are not bothered that the NSA and other federal organizations are conducting these extensive surveillance programs. Those who are middle age (30 to 55) tend to be neutral to uncomfortable that these programs are being run. Those who are in their twenties are opposed and hostile to these surveillance programs. But the greatest hostility comes from those who are under 20 .... none of them want older people to even have the option of being able to screen and access what they are communicating.

Back in Time Series | William Binney NSA Whistleblower Keynote, HOPE 9 Conference July 2012

Source: hopenumbernine.net, William Binney Wikipedia

Description:
Hope Nine Conference, July 12th-15th, 2012 N.Y.C.
Keynote: William Binney

Our second keynote address at this year's HOPE Number Nine conference will be delivered by former National Security Agency analyst turned whistleblower William Binney. William Binney served in the NSA for over 30 years, including a time as director of the NSA's World Geopolitical and Military Analysis Reporting Group. Based on his experience and background, he estimates that the NSA has put together over 20,000,000,000,000 (20 trillion) "transactions" - phone calls, emails, and other forms of data - from Americans. Surprising as it may sound, it's entirely possible that this could include copies of almost all of the emails sent and received from most people who live in the United States.

By coming forward to expose these abuses and provide evidence to the public and the media, Binney displays those qualities that so many in the hacker community strive for: courage, standing up to authority, revealing the
truth, and honoring the rights of the individual. Regardless of where any of us wind up in the future, these values will always serve us well - and will help to foster a truly democratic society. -hopenumbernine.net
