Italy may abandon euro if debt not renegotiated - Beppe Grillo

The economic crisis may see Italy abandoning euro and returning to lira, says comedian-turned-politician, Beppe Grillo, who’s anti-establishment Five Star Movement became a major power in the country’s politics after the last week’s general election.

In his interview with German Focus magazine, Grillo urged for the renegotiation of Italy’s €2-trillion debt, which is the second highest in the euro zone after Greece, at 127 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).

“Right now we are being crushed, not by the euro, but by our debt. When the interest payments reach €100 billion a year, we’re dead. There’s no alternative,” the 64-year-old said.

According to the Five Star Movement leader’s forecast, the Italian political system has "only six months" left before it collapses and the state will no longer be able "to pay pensions and public sector salaries".

If there’ll be no changes to the debt obligations, Grillo believes, the option for his country would be to leave the euro and return to it's former national currency, the lira.

"If I've bought shares in a company that goes bankrupt, then that's my bad luck. I took a risk, and lost,"
he explained, drawing a comparison with the private market. “If the conditions remain the same, Italy would leave the euro and return to the lira.”

The Five Star Movement has attracted the sympathy of nearly a quarter of the many austerity-weary voters to win 109 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 54 seats in the Senate in the general election on February 24-25. This has created a political deadlock.

Neither Pier Luigi Bersani‘s center-Left Democratic Party nor the center-Right coalition led by Silvio Berlusconi currently have sufficient majority in in both chambers to form a government. The conditions of the parliament’s newcomers is unacceptable to the established parties preventing the formation of a coalition government.

"If Bersani's PD and Berlusconi's PDL suggest an immediate change in the electoral law, cancellation of election expenses reimbursement, and a maximum of two terms for any deputy – we would of course support such a government immediately," Grillo said."But they won't do that. They are just bluffing to win time."

"If we get into parliament we would bring the old system down, not because we would enjoy doing so but because the system is rotten," he added.

The Five Star Movement has everything it takes to become a huge headache for the European leaders, who have urged Italy to stay on the economic course laid out by Mario Monti ‘s outgoing government.

"Italy, as a major European economy, has a great responsibility,”
Philipp Roesler, Germany's Economy Minister, was quoted in the same edition of Focus. “There is no alternative to the policy of structural reforms... I'm confident that those responsible in Italy recognize the importance of stability.”

Beppe Grillo was a popular comedian on Italian television in 80s, but he disappeared from the screen in the 90s, with many suggesting that his harsh satire was too much to handle for Italian politicians.

After that he mainly performed in theatres and staged a series of mass rallies, including the 2007 V-Day celebrations, which gathered around 2 million people, protesting against the criminal activities of the Italian political elite.

The Five Star Movement was started by Grillo in 2010 and has made a splash at local elections, receiving the third highest number of votes overall and winning the mayoral election for Parma before the latest success in the general election.

For the Italian government to be able to pass legislation, it must have a majority both in the Chamber, and the Senate, and to achieve this majority coalitions are often formed

EU follows Italy’s move to recognize Syrian opposition coalition

Italy has recognized Syria’s National Coalition as the "legitimate representative" of the Syrian people. The EU has followed that lead declaring the newly formed political body as the only representative of the “aspirations of the Syrian people.”

"We have recognized the coalition that brings together the various opposition groups as legitimate representatives of the Syrian people," Italian Prime Minister, Mario Monti told reporters in Doha on Monday.

The Syrian National Coalition was formed on 11 November when the country’s disparate opposition leaders met in Doha. The body replaced Syrian National Council which had been criticized for being ineffective.

The Foreign ministers of 27 EU nations said the agreement reached in Qatar is a major step towards the necessary unification of the Syrian opposition.

The ministers urged the coalition to continue to respect human rights and democracy and to work with all opposition groups and sections of Syrian society. The statement also said that the EU was “ready” to support coalition relations with the international community.

"I think we will invite the Coalition leaders to our next meeting (in December) to allow them to talk to all the foreign ministers, which will be highly symbolic," said French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.

Last week France was the first European country to recognize the coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people and a future democratic government. The newly formed coalition has also been recognized by the Gulf Cooperation Council and Turkey.

Earlier this month Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron suggested lifting the 2011 EU arms embargo against all sides in the Syrian conflict. This would allow Western countries to help the opposition in its fight against President Assad.

According to different estimates, the conflict that has been unfolding in Syria since March 2011 has already claimed between 28,000 and 40,000 lives.

The Governments of Europe and North America support Israel’s Mass Murder campaign in Gaza

Western leaders have come out publicly in support of Israeli military attacks on the people of Gaza by either stating so for the record or by staying silent. Both positions show total support for Israel’s crimes of mass murder and should be addressed immediately be the people of each nation.

Mass Murder Approved by Your Government:

When your government gives their blessing for another country to commit mass murder of men, women and children, it means that they would have no problems doing so on the population within their own country, or sections of it. Let us not forget that these Western Nations are the very same countries that spoke of humanitarian aid to the people of Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria but instead approved a coordinated bombing campaign or provided the weapons and funding to hired terrorists from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and other autocratic states to do the job for them. Such is the case in Syria and to a large extent, also in Libya back in 2011. However, in the case of Libya, western countries took an active role in bombing the Libyan people into the Stone Age, where once a thriving population lived in peace and prosperity. Today Libya lays in ruins with our freedom and liberty banks imposing massive debt for the destruction they caused. Nothing will be repaired and no one will receive justice as is the case in Iraq, and Afghanistan.

In Syria, the same western nations are training, funding and giving weapons to their hired thugs to completely destroy the country as they have launched a full scale bombing campaign on the Syrian population. Now the same western countries are in full support of wiping out the entire nation of Palestine especially Gaza where 1.5 million people are imprisoned and suffer occupation and blockade by the murderous regime of Israel.

History Repeats from Warsaw to Gaza:

Gaza’s resistance can be compared to that of the Jewish people in the “Warsaw Ghetto” Poland in World War II, where Jewish resistance challenged the maniacal occupiers and oppressors of their day. Today in Palestine, the same situation is faced by the people of Gaza where resistance by an imprisoned population is met by the brute force of a maniacal Zionist oppressor and a madman bent on starting wars all over the Middle East…and your government supports this Israeli Madman Netanyahu and his regime that pushes “Ethnic Cleansing.”

Would you trust your government to make moral and ethical decisions on your behalf?

Western Governments are morally bankrupt and cannot be trusted to do anything honest or ethical because they approve of the most horrendous of crimes against humanity, “War” and “Ethnic Cleansing”.

Put yourself in the position of the Palestinian people, imagine if your community or country is occupied by a foreign nation where you are surrounded by an aggressive military blockade by land, sea, and air and where survival depends on tunnels to maintain the lives of your children or the few trucks of food allowed in for minimal subsistence living…you have no means to take care of anyone and when your children get sick there is no medicine to take care of them. If you go to the border and complain you risk being shot and killed by a ruthless Israeli military that is of the opinion that you are nothing but animals and deserve what you get. When anyone resists the occupation the whole community is subject to massive destruction by military attack campaigns. If your citizens manage to fire a few bullets back at them, you’re labelled terrorists by the leaders of the international community where the permission to attack is given to the occupier.

Being Irish decent and coming from 700 years of oppression, I understand the mental anguish that the people of Gaza are experiencing and like my ancestors before me, the Palestinian people have a moral right to fight for their freedom even if the odds are decidedly against them by one of the World’s largest military killing machines. What is terrorism but a label used by an occupation force on those that resist occupation?

Your leaders are backing the mass murder and ethnic cleansing of Palestine. How do you feel about that?

What will you do?

The next time I bump into anyone that sides with the Zionist agenda, I will ask them to look into their children’s eyes and tell them that they support the slaughter of innocent women and children…I will also question their ethics or logic and ask them if it is because their Television tells them to back Israeli ethnic cleansing of Palestine, is it because they support their political leaders no matter what they do, or because they just side with mass murder?

My advice to anyone that will listen…get up and oppose Israel and anyone that stands with them with every fibre of your being. Use common sense, moral and ethical positions, human rights, and empathy for your fellow mankind because if you do not, the events that happen in Palestine will come back in ways you never imagined. As goes Palestine, so goes the rest of the World.

Tell your political leaders to "fuck off" and just “Stop the Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Israel!” You have to get really mad!!

Free Palestine!!

Violent clashes erupt as Italy protests austerity

Violent clashes erupted between police and protesters in the northern Italian town of Riva del Garda as tens of thousands took to the streets of Italy in a nationwide anti-austerity demonstration dubbed ‘No Monti Day.’

Police used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd of angry protesters who fought back with clubs and banners on the streets of Riva del Garda.

Reports say the country’s Prime Minister Mario Monti, who is seen by many as a root cause of the Italian people’s suffering, was attending a meeting in Riva del Garda when the clashes began.

The demonstration in Riva del Garda was just one out of many taking place in Italy on Saturday.

In Rome police expected some 30,000 to take to the streets, but activists estimate that up to 100,000 showed up.

Protesters marched through the city to demand more jobs, investment in schools and universities, more money for healthcare and the end of the austerity policy brokered by Monti and his technocratic cabinet.

Monti, who replaced Silvio Berlusconi last November, is accused of introducing tough austerity measures that have hit ordinary Italians hardest asthe country’s economy continues to falter.

The protests in Italy come a year after ‘Occupy Rome’ turned extremely violent as scores of masked protesters attacked police with rocks, clubs and hummers.

The rioters torched cars, smashed windows, looted shops and even set the building housing Italy’s Defense Ministry on fire.

Moody’s lowers credit rating of major Italian bank to Junk Status

Moody’s Investors Service has slashed the credit rating of Italy’s Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena.

Moody’s Investors Service has slashed the credit rating of Italy’s third biggest bank Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (BMPS) to ‘junk’ status, saying Rome’s recapitalization program is feared to prove inadequate.

The rating agency said on Thursday that the lowering of the bank’s rating by two notches to ‘Baaa3’ (a non-investment grade) reflects Moody’s view that there “remains a material probability that the bank will need to seek further external support.”

Earlier in June, BMPS, the world’s oldest bank, said it was set to borrow around 1.5 billion euros ( about 1.87 billion dollars) from the Italian government to pay off its debt and beef up its capital.

The ailing bank has also said it would downsize its workforce by 4,600 employees by 2015.

In July, Moody’s also lowered the debt ratings of 13 Italian banks, including Unicredit and Intesa Sanpaolo, by one to two notches, citing the Italian government’s weakened creditworthiness.

Several eurozone member states, including Greece, Spain and Italy, have been struggling with deep economic woes since the financial crisis began about five years ago.

Over the past decade, Italy has been the slowest growing economy in the euro area.

The continued recession in the eurozone’s third-largest economy is gloomy news for Italians, who have seen a series of austerity packages, tax hikes and pension charges.

The worsening debt crisis has forced the EU governments to adopt harsh austerity measures and tough economic reforms, which have triggered incidents of social unrest and massive protests in many European countries.

Italian separatist movement presses for statehood

Amid statehood pushes in Catalonia and Scotland, a pro-independence movement is rallying support behind its call for the region of Veneto in northeastern Italy’s becoming its own country.

Separatist Indipendenza Veneta has reportedly gathered up a legion of pro-independence supporters among the region’s residents. According to local paper Il Gazzettino, those supporting Veneto’s statehood comprise 70 percent of the local population.

Repubblica Veneta, the movement’s name for the independent state, it expects to form, would be home to about five million people and include Venice, the surrounding region of Veneto, and parts of Lombardy, Trentino, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, which borders Slovenia and Austria.

Last month, a rally, organized by the separatists, attracted large numbers of protesters in front of the central government in Veneto. The crowd urged an immediate referendum on the region’s independence from Rome.

“The situation here is almost explosive so, today, we have thousands of people who have gathered in front of the regional government and we’re going to present to them a resolution signed by thousands of participants to have a referendum for independence,” said the head of the movmenet, Lodovico Pizzati.

Venice was an independent republic for more than 1,000 years up to 1797.

President of Veneto, Luca Zaia said last week that Venetians were tired of being “slaves of Rome.”
