Amid Media Blackout Anti-Government Protests Spread In Sudan

Khartoum Under Threat from Protests, Observers Say -- Voice of America

NAIROBI — Over the past week, Sudan has seen its most serious protests in almost three decades. Demonstrations over rising prices after the government decided to lift fuel subsidies have mutated into riots, and dozens of people have died. The streets have calmed, but analysts say that this could be a turning point for the ruling party and longtime President Omar al-Bashir.

The protests started a week ago in one town, but quickly spread to others and the capital, Khartoum, where protesters torched vehicles, gas stations, police buildings and hurled stones at security forces.

The protests are seen as the greatest challenge to Bashir’s rule since he came to power in a 1989 military coup.

Violent Protests Continue In Sudan

Sudanese Use Tear Gas On Crowd Demanding President Resign -- Reuters

(Reuters) - Police fired tear gas to disperse thousands of Sudanese demanding the resignation of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir after rights groups accused security forces of shooting dead at least 50 people in the worst unrest in Sudan's central region for years.

Around 3,000 people, angered by a police crackdown on protests against the lifting of fuel subsidies, took to the streets after Friday prayers in Khartoum's twin-city Omdurman across the Nile, shouting "freedom, freedom" and "the people want the fall of the regime".

Defying a massive security presence with army trucks parked on main streets, the crowd marched to the central market, holding up banners saying "No, no to price increases."

Police fired tear gas after the crowd had marched some two kilometers through the center. Some protesters ran for cover but the bulk of the crowd remained, some hurling stones at the police, others torching cars.

Sudan Rocked By Riots Over Cuts In Subsidies

27 Dead in Sudan Protests; Bashir Cancels UN Trip -- Voice of America

Medical officials in Sudan say at least 27 people have died in four days of protests against the government's decision to cut fuel subsidies.

The suspension has caused a sharp rise in fuel prices, a development that has angered civilians and prompted some to call for the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir.

Late Wednesday, Sudan said Mr. Bashir has canceled a planned appearance in New York at the U.N. General Assembly.

Meanwhile, Sudanese authorities have deployed security forces around key installations and gas stations, after rioters set buildings on fire and blocked roads.

The escalating unrest, has become one of the biggest challenges to Mr. Bashir's government since he seized power in 1989.
