Boko Haram Attack On Nigerian College Results In A Massacre Of 50 Students

Nigeria Attack: Students Shot Dead As They Slept -- BBC

Suspected Islamist gunmen have attacked a college in north-eastern Nigeria, killing up to 50 students.

The students were shot dead as they slept in their dormitory at the College of Agriculture in Yobe state.

North-eastern Nigeria is under a state of emergency amid an Islamist insurgency by the Boko Haram group.

Boko Haram is fighting to overthrow Nigeria's government to create an Islamic state, and has launched a number of attacks on schools.

Classrooms burned

Casualty figures from the latest attack vary, but a local politician told the BBC that around 50 students had been killed.

The politician said two vanloads of bodies had been taken to a hospital in Yobe's state capital, Damaturu.

Multiple Attacks By Boko Haram And A Massacre Are Being Reported In Nigeria

Nigeria's 'Boko Haram': Abuja Sees Security Forces Targeted -- BBC

A cell of suspected Islamist militants has opened fire on security forces in Nigeria's capital Abuja, say officials.

The clash occurred at about 03:00 local time after a tip off about the location of a suspected Boko Haram weapons cache, Nigeria's spy agency said.

The State Security Service did not give any details about casualties. A witness told the BBC he saw nine bodies.

Boko Haram is most active in north-eastern Nigeria, where a state of emergency was imposed in May.

If confirmed, it would be the first time Boko Haram has staged an attack in Abuja this year.

Attacks in the north-east have increased recently despite a massive military deployment to the worst-affected areas.

In the latest incident in Borno state, officials said at least 87 people had been killed by militants, who disguised themselves in military uniforms at a checkpoint outside the town of Benisheik. They shot dead those trying to flee.

The group wants to create an Islamic state across Nigeria and has waged a deadly insurgency since 2009.

Nigerian Military Launch A Military Offensive Against The Islamist Group Boko Haram

Nigerian Army Says Kills 150 Insurgents, Loses 16 Troops -- Reuters

(Reuters) - Nigeria's military said on Wednesday it had killed 150 insurgents, including a commander named Abba Goroma, in an operation against Islamist group Boko Haram in which 16 of its own forces were also killed.

Violence in northeast Nigeria has intensified over the past two months, as the Islamists fight back against a military operation that president Goodluck Jonathan ordered in May to try to crush their four-year rebellion.

Army spokesman Brigadier General Ibrahim Attahiru said a series of raids carried out on Islamist camps in northeastern Borno state had pushed Boko Haram into hiding in a forest.

He said they had received intelligence reports on September 12 that they were planning to launch an attack from there, adding that they were "well fortified with anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns mounted on vehicles".

"Based on this report, our own troops launched a deliberate attack. Over 150 insurgents were killed and the formation lost an officer and 15 soldiers," he said.

Nigeria Military Claims To Have Killed 50 Boko Haram Fighters -- Deutsche Welle

The Nigerian military has said it has killed around 50 Boko Haram Islamists during a raid in the northeast of the country. The operation was carried out in response to an attack earlier this week.

The military sent troops backed by air support to an insurgent camp to carry out the raid, military spokesman Sagir Musa told reporters in the city of Maiduguri on Friday.

"Troops pursued the terrorists to their camps with air support and about 50 insurgents were killed in a shootout," Musa said. "Troops are pursuing the remnants of the fleeing terrorists by blocking all possible escape routes."

At least 44 worshippers have been shot dead at a mosque in northeast Nigeria, officials in Borno state say.

The killings took place during dawn prayers on Sunday morning, although news only emerged on Monday.

The attack occurred in the town of Konduga, 35km (22 miles) from the state capital Maiduguri.

The gunmen are suspected to be from the Islamist group Boko Haram, which has killed thousands in northern Nigeria since 2009.

Nigeria's Daily Post reported that a further 26 people were being treated for injuries in hospital in Maiduguri.
