The Syrian army has fully purged the Suleiman al-Halabi district of the flashpoint city of Aleppo of foreign-backed insurgents.

Syrian security forces engaged insurgents on Thursday and killed a number of armed men, forcing them to leave the area, the official SANA news agency reported.

The army also inflicted heavy losses on insurgents in the Baedin district and destroyed seven pickup trucks equipped with Dushka machine guns in the city, located about 355 kilometers (220 miles) north of Damascus.

In addition, the Syrian forces destroyed a weapons cache in the al-Halk Square neighborhood and killed all the gunmen at the site. Syrian soldiers also raided a terrorist hideout near the Sport Institute in Bustan al-Basha district and killed dozens of insurgents in the process.

A similar mop-up operation was also carried out in the al-Sakhour neighborhood of Aleppo, where the army destroyed dozens of vehicles equipped with Dushka machine guns and killed a large number of terrorists.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 and many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence, but the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in August that the country is engaged in a “crucial and heroic” battle that will determine the destiny of the nation.

At least 40 killed over 70 injured in three blasts that rocked Aleppo

Syrian state TV reports of three powerful explosions in downtown Aleppo, the financial hub and largest city of the country. Reportedly the blasts were caused by car bombs that terrorists delivered to the city’s main square.

Later, terrorists struck again, blowing up a fourth car, this time near a municipal palace in Baba Amr quarter, reports Lebanese Al-Manar TV station.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says that activists on the ground report 40 fatalities and 72 injured in the terror act, most of them military servicemen.

The Saadallah al-Jabri square in central Aleppo where the first three explosions took place is currently controlled by government forces.

Most of the victims of the blasts are civilians. Luckily enough, the three cars on Saadallah al-Jabri square went off early in the morning when the municipal buildings were empty. The House of Officers has reportedly been completely destroyed. Rescuers continue to clear up the debris and the number of victims may grow.

Terror acts like this are not common in Aleppo. The first one happened in February, when two suicide car bombers attacked security compounds in Aleppo's industrial center killing 28 people. Since then, there have only been two similar attacks.

‘Syria reminiscent of Afghanistan 1979’

The extensive use of explosives in Syria indicates an increasing strength of jihadist groups, including Al-Qaeda, in Syria, believes Khuram Iqbal, co-author of Pakistan Terrorism Ground Zero. The presence of Islamic radicals in Syria has been admitted by the UN and various international agencies.

“What’s happening in Syria these days reminds me of Afghanistan back in 1979, when the Western democracies supported international jihad against the Soviet Union. Back then the Western capitals were able to confront the Soviet Union, but the long-term consequences were really devastating for the regional and international peace,” recalls Iqbal, warning against supporting rebel movements because of unpredictable consequences.

Explosive terrorist acts on the streets of Syrian cities do not bring considerable tactical advantage to the rebel groups because they risk losing any popular support in the country and on the part of the international community, Iqbal believes.

The armed men were killed during intense clashes with Syrian troops on Tuesday in the al-Ramouseh Bridge neighborhood of the city, which is located 355 kilometers (220 miles) north of Damascus, the SANA news agency reported.

An insurgent commander, identified as Khalid Zakariya al-Mustafa, was killed during the clashes.

Syrian troops also shot dead all members of an armed terrorist group in the Karm al-Jabal neighborhood of the violence-plagued city.

Meanwhile, dozens of gunmen were killed and injured near al-Jankiyeh orchard in the al-Sheikh Khudr neighborhood as they were attempting to enter Suleiman al-Halabi district to rescue their comrades, who had suffered heavy losses.

The Syrian Army also inflicted heavy losses on foreign-sponsored insurgents in Aleppo’s al-Atareb district on Tuesday and destroyed four pickup trucks equipped with Dushka machine guns.

Syrian soldiers also attacked insurgents in al-Tananer, Kastal Harami, and Kadi Askar neighborhoods of Aleppo, destroying dozens of vehicles equipped with Dushka machine guns and killing a large number of terrorists.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011.

Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country and accuses Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey of arming the opposition.

The Syrian army has attacked armed groups’ positions across the country, inflicting heavy losses on insurgents fighting against the government.

According to Syrian authorities, the army has inflicted huge losses on armed groups in Aleppo's al-Eda'a and Saif al-Dawla districts on Friday as heavy fighting between government forces and armed groups continues in several other neighborhoods, including Bustan al-Qasr, Halak, Bab al-Hadid and Darat Azzeh.

Syrian troops also located and stormed a warehouse used by insurgents for storing weapons shipped from Turkey. There are also reports that tribes in some districts of Aleppo have joined the army in its fight against armed groups.

Meanwhile, Syrian troops clashed with foreign-backed armed groups in the western city of Homs, Damascus suburb of Manin, and also near the Iraqi and Lebanese borders. Dozens of insurgents were killed during clashes in Manin and a large number of terrorists were injured in Homs.

The Syrian army has launched a mop-up operation against insurgents in the northern city of Aleppo since Wednesday and so far, several districts, including insurgents' stronghold of Salahuddin, have been cleared of terrorist groups.

Foreign-backed armed groups have been carrying out terrorist attacks in Aleppo since July 20 after they were defeated in the capital, Damascus, and were forced to flee.

Some reports suggest that anti-government insurgents operating in Aleppo may have been provided with chemical weapons. The insurgents have also acquired dozens of the portable surface-to-air missiles.

Syria has been the scene of deadly unrest since mid-March, 2011 and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on August 1 that the country is engaged in a ''crucial and heroic'' battle that will determine the destiny of the nation .

Syrian security forces have killed two local al-Qaeda leaders and nearly two dozen foreign-sponsored insurgents in clashes near the northwestern city of Aleppo, Press TV reports.

The security forces carried out an operation in the town of Tal Rafa’at, about 38 kilometers (23 miles) north of Aleppo, on Tuesday, killing the al-Qaeda leaders.

The government troops also killed at least 20 insurgents during clashes in a rural area near Aleppo.

Meanwhile, fighting continues between the Syrian army and the insurgents in several areas of Aleppo, including the northern neighborhood of Ashrafyiah, the southern district of Sokkari and the central area of Seif al-Dowla.

Reports say the insurgents have also attacked the police department in the city.

Similar clashes have also been reported in the western city of Homs over the past few days.

Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil in Syria that began in March 2011.

On August 5, US senators John McCain, Joseph Lieberman and Lindsey Graham said Washington should “directly and openly” provide assistance, including weapons, intelligence and training, to the insurgents in Syria.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on August 1 that the country is engaged in a “crucial and heroic” battle that will determine the destiny of the nation.
