President Obama Will Still Address The Nation Amid The Russian Diplomatic Push For Syria To Give Up It's Chemical Weapons

Obama To Address Nation On Syria Amid Diplomatic Push -- USA Today

WASHINGTON — President Obama will address the nation Tuesday night on chemical weapons in Syria, as a new diplomatic push puts military and congressional action on hold.

Diplomacy surfaced Monday when Russia — ally of Syria and opponent of U.S. military strikes -- said it would ask Bashar Assad's government to place its chemical weapons stock under international control.

Syria announced Tuesday it would accept Russia's offer, and Russia said it would work with Assad on the details.

My Comment: As to what is my take on what has happened in the past 24 hours .... the U.S. is now reacting to diplomatic moves, not instigating them. And while I do agree with US Secretary of State John Kerry that it will be ‘exceedingly difficult’ for Syria to satisfy the terms of Russian proposal .... the Syrian crisis is no longer in the hands of the U.S. government .... other players are now involved. Russia, France with it's UN resolution that gives credence to the Russian chemical plan, the U.N., the Syrian government, etc. .... in short, the U.S. has been marginalized without realizing that it has been marginalized. And while President Obama will claim victory as he pushes ahead on his Syria plan with Congress .... the momentum has clearly shifted away from him. In fact .... the only thing that the U.S. can do while diplomatic efforts are underway is to say the following .... Kerry says U.S. won't wait long for concrete plan on Syria chemical weapons.
